Tourism |
As part of Gov. Gary Locke’s mandate to create “real jobs in Indian Country” -- GOIA and the Office of Trade and Economic Development (OTED) released the first ever in-depth assessment of tribal tourism in Washington State in 2001. The assessment acted as a catalyst for the tribes to apply for and be awarded a $300,000 Administration for Native Americans grant to implement a statewide tribal tourism development effort. The Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians Economic Development Corporation (ATNI-EDC) is working in cooperation with both agencies to support the development of a culturally appropriate tribal tourism program. Their focus is on all northwest federally recognized tribes interested in promoting cultural centers, gaming venues, RV parks and recreation facilities, annual art shows and powwows, in an effort to draw the interests of statewide and worldwide visitors. Although the needs and desires for tourism development vary depending on a tribe’s location, culture, size and access to financial, natural and human resources, a strong tourism and marketing plan and resource networking will aid in accomplishing this.
